The winter of 1607-08 was a particularly cold one in Europe. Hendrick Avercamp was one of the first Dutch painters to specialise in snow scenes and his 1608 oil painting Winter Landscape with Skaters depicts townsfolk skating, playing kolf, walking and occasionally falling over on an icy frozen river. Accredited Lecturer Dr Sophie Oosterwijk will show us the fascinating stories in this painting, which is now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Our Societies support hundreds of local arts and heritage projects. Each day we highlight a grant given in 2021.
The Richmond Music Trust was recently awarded a grant by The Arts Society Richmond. The Trust provides subsidised music lessons in schools in Richmond Borough, loans instruments to pupils and provides music therapy.
All donations from the Artvent Calendar will go towards The Arts Society’s grant giving fund, which awards grants to help preserve our artistic heritage, support the skills of artists and makers, and improve access to the arts for all.

A fascinating talk on a very interesting painting and a tantalising introduction to the genre of Dutch winter landscapes. it took me back to my childhood in Canada skating and playing hockey on frozen ponds and streams.
Thank you
Always a fan of Dutch art and really enjoyed this lecture. So much to look at - it would make a great jigsaw puzzle as you'd have to study each piece in detail.
Many thanks.
A really excellent lecture with great depth and detail. Definitely one of the best for me and a pleasure from star to finish. Thank you Sophie.
This was one of the best in an excellent series. I've really looked forward to each day's email link. Thanks to all the speakers and to the organisers.
Thank you - absolutely fascinating. One of the best talks in this series. These winter landscapes are my kind of painting - I love imaging what the people are discussing, looking at what they are wearing and doing and how they lived. So very interesting.
Another great talk
An excellent lecture the presentation was perfect, an artist that I had no knowledge of which has broadened was horizon. Thank you for 31 days of immense pleasure.
I found her lecture fascinating. I wanted her to continue about other paintings.
Thank you so much
Thank you, excellent ‘unwrapping’
What an enlightening and lively lecture. Thank you so much Sophie for providing such varied details as you highlighted all the little cameos. It was fascinating. I learnt more about the different horizon points too as you compared Avercamp’s painting with other works on similar themes. I loved your sense of fun too.
