Hendrick Avercamp, Winter Landscape with Skaters

The winter of 1607-08 was a particularly cold one in Europe. Hendrick Avercamp was one of the first Dutch painters to specialise in snow scenes and his 1608 oil painting Winter Landscape with Skaters depicts townsfolk skating, playing kolf, walking and occasionally falling over on an icy frozen river. Accredited Lecturer Dr Sophie Oosterwijk will show us the fascinating stories in this painting, which is now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Our Societies support hundreds of local arts and heritage projects. Each day we highlight a grant given in 2021.

The Richmond Music Trust was recently awarded a grant by The Arts Society Richmond. The Trust provides subsidised music lessons in schools in Richmond Borough, loans instruments to pupils and provides music therapy.

All donations from the Artvent Calendar will go towards The Arts Society’s grant giving fund, which awards grants to help preserve our artistic heritage, support the skills of artists and makers, and improve access to the arts for all.

A really interesting lecture which I didn’t want to end! Just right for this time of year. I also had not heard of the artist but Sophie made me want to learn more about him and see similar paintings.
Thank you very much

One of my favourite paintings bought to life in this wonderful lecture. More from Sophie in the new year I hope. Thank you

A perceptive and fascinating insight by an excellent lecturer. It was so evocative of a cold winter's day that I was there shivering on the ice with them.

Thank you for such a brilliant lecture which held my attention all the way through and made me curious to see more works by this artist. It was beautifully presented and had a wealth of detail and yet such a broad scope.

Many thanks to you all for your lovely feedback, and to the Arts Society for inviting me to take part in this wonderful Artvent Calendar series, which I too have enjoyed.
