Facing the Darkness

We love this talk about Rembrandt: Facing the Darkness which is part of the wonderful series of HENI Talks, presented by Zach Taylor.

Zach won the ARTiculation Prize 2019 for his heartfelt and intelligent discussion of Rembrandt’s self-portraits, an adaption of which was filmed by HENI Talks at the National Gallery. Zach explores how through facing the darkness in his personal life, Rembrandt brings his viewers into the light. With his mastery of chiaroscuro and references to the great artists of the past, he positioned himself as a master of a new age: confident in his talents yet honest about the effects of painful life experiences.

ARTiculation is the Roche Court Educational Trust’s acclaimed initiative which champions students, aged between 16 – 19 regardless of background and experience. It provides a platform for students to develop their confidence and ability to express their opinions, thoughts and ideas, through the arts and public speaking.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Our Societies support hundreds of local arts and heritage projects. Each day we highlight a grant given in 2021.

The Arts Society Blackwater are purchasing an art cart for Maldon Museum, a museum which is run entirely by volunteers including some Arts Society members. The art materials will help the art activities at the museum when local schools and families visit.

All donations from the Artvent Calendar will go towards The Arts Society’s grant giving fund, which awards grants to help preserve our artistic heritage, support the skills of artists and makers, and improve access to the arts for all.

I was emotionally touched by your talk Zack, you have shown here such a deep understanding and given us such a sensitive analysis of Rembrandt and his work already at such a young age - I wish you luck in what I’m sure will be a hugely successful and fulfilling career.

Eloquent, informative, thought-provoking and promoting a more keen eye on Rembrandt's self-portraits. Watched it twice. Excellent Zak.

To me this superb talk is about the essence of art, how it sets up a relationship between the painter and the viewer. Evoking for each viewer their own personal response and interpretation.

Thank you so much. I was mesmerised (hope I have spelt that correctly) and humbled at the greatness of Rembrandt's genius which was so well presented.
