Angel of the North

Possibly the largest angel in the world, the Angel of the North commemorates the miners who worked in the area, but also reflects the spiritual aspects of Antony Gormley's personality and his fascination with the human body. Accredited Lecturer Frank Woodgate explains Gormley's vision

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Our Societies support hundreds of local arts and heritage projects. Each day we highlight a grant given in 2021.

The National Horse Racing Museum has received a grant from The Arts Society Newmarket. The world home of horse racing, it informs the local community about the history of racing and offers temporary and permanent exhibitions, education, workshops and open days for the local and wider community. The grant will be used to offer free entry and activities to families living in poverty.

All donations from the Artvent Calendar will go towards The Arts Society’s grant giving fund, which awards grants to help preserve our artistic heritage, support the skills of artists and makers, and improve access to the arts for all.

Thank you Frank for an informative talk about Antony Gormley's vision for his work. Using Google I found images for the works you mentioned as well as for his many other art projects.

Enjoyed the talk but why not more visuals to illustrate the work he was talking about? What a wasted opportunity. Headshots are not in themselves interesting

I've always admired Gormley's work along with his thinking and his ideals as an artist.
Angel of the North evokes for me the same awe as any great piece of architecture, art, seascspe or landscape- go and stand beside it if you can, you'll love it!

Underwhelmed by Gormley's work but interesting to hear of his spirituaity
Not sure of connection to Christmas here so much unless the fact of it being an angel
Have enjoyed hearing the variety of festive themes and elements across all the days. Thanks

I can fully appreciate the reasoning behind designing and erecting a monument to the miners and involving local businesses in the construction of said monument. However, on a personal level I don’t like the Angel - it’s too stark and looks top heavy for my tastes. Having said all that, everyone has their own tastes. Thank you for an interesting talk.

Thank you for this reminder of the work of this great artist. I have heard him speak at a talk and find him inspirational so I hope today`s talk will get more people to know his work. I too would have liked more images today and mention of some of the many other works, such as the ones on the beach near Liverpool and the statue in the sea off the Turner Gallery.

Thank you Arts Soc for this wonderful project which has brightened December for me.( and no doubt many others).
