Take a closer look at this illuminating painting by one of our greatest contemporary artists, explored by auctioneer Francis Outred in a short film made for Christies in 2011.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Our Societies support hundreds of local arts and heritage projects. Each day we highlight a grant given in 2021.
The Arts Society Turners Hill recently awarded a grant to Koestler Arts, the UK’s best-known prison arts charity which encourages people in the criminal justice system to change their lives by participating in the arts.
All donations from the Artvent Calendar will go towards The Arts Society’s grant giving fund, which awards grants to help preserve our artistic heritage, support the skills of artists and makers, and improve access to the arts for all.

This is the most exquisite and moving representation of light I have ever seen. It is quite breathtakingly in its intensity and almost transcendent luminosity.
Thank you for each day’s delights, but especially this one.
So beautiful, I swear I can see it flickering!
Thank you for sharing this and every other treasure in our 2021 advent calendar.
Its is truly wonderful and amazing that a candle in a painting or lit at home on the mantlepiece, can give one so many emotions, to to find others of similar thinking.

Wonderful minimalist subject matter it reminds me of Nam June Paik’s installation https://images.app.goo.gl/Xg54qhHviQbR7tqY8
Mesmerising - look long enough and the candlelight flickers ... very beautiful work of art.
I'm loving that people are reading very different meanings into this painting. I think it shows what a great work it is
I have 18 candles alive in my small dining room and I love them so I the addition of a simple glorious painting was a heart stopping moment of beauty!
Hello everyone. Thank you for sharing your comments and thoughts each day. I don't want to spoil what may be a surprise to some, but we have a further 7 Artvent items to share after tomorrow (so up to & including the 31st December), plus something a little extra tomorrow!
We'd originally planned 24, but discovered more content we wanted to share, so thought we'd extend our brief to cover the whole month - it is Artvent not advent after all!
So keep watching for our emails!
I’ve just returned from a walk with grey skies and a damp atmosphere but as soon as I checked out today’s Artvent, my day was full of light. It is so difficult to depict light and this is so well evoked in Richter’s Kerze. Once again, thank you for all the clips you have sent. This one ranks among the highest and is, for me, a beacon of hope in an anxious world.
