Light, Meaning, Solstice

Join Accredited Lecturer Julian Richards as he explores the celebration of light and life at Stonehenge and reflects on the significance of sunlight for prehistoric humans as a mark of the passage of time.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Our Societies support hundreds of local arts and heritage projects. Each day we highlight a grant given in 2021.

The Art Society Blackheath has awarded a grant to Age Exchange, a hub of community activities specialising in reminiscence based intergenerational arts projects for people living with dementia, loneliness and isolation.

All donations from the Artvent Calendar will go towards The Arts Society’s grant giving fund, which awards grants to help preserve our artistic heritage, support the skills of artists and makers, and improve access to the arts for all.

Thank you Julian for reminding us how inventive people in the past built such an amazing and unique structure.

Simple messages put across so well. Uplifting.
Nearly 65 years ago my school class was let loose around the stones, no restrictions and no explanations of who built, where the stones came from and why it was built. Thank goodness our understanding of the stones and their relevance has improved. Thank you

Just what I needed this morning, our Christmas plans are going awry because of Covid in the family so I will celebrate the shortest day instead and lets hope for many sunny, light filled days in the coming year. Many thanks for this and all the other contributions.

So Interesting, as was the extra clip of the setting sun from
johnmac, thank you. In the late 1940's my family and I had a picnic breakfast at the stones, on our way to a holiday in the West Country. We were the only people there. There was no car park, no ticket office and there were no restrictions. We sat on the grass in the early morning sunshine and marvelled at this extraordinary monument.
Quite magical.

An excellent idea, Tricia, to show the sun setting at the Winter Solstice, although maybe a bit long to add to the Artvent video? For those who are interested, here's a link to a Youtube video (about 7mins long) from BBC Countryfile showing a timelapse version of the Winter sun setting at Stonehenge. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/nets8qNt-0w
