Gerhard Richter's Kerze

Take a closer look at this illuminating painting by one of our greatest contemporary artists, explored by auctioneer Francis Outred in a short film made for Christies in 2011.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Our Societies support hundreds of local arts and heritage projects. Each day we highlight a grant given in 2021.

The Arts Society Turners Hill recently awarded a grant to Koestler Arts, the UK’s best-known prison arts charity which encourages people in the criminal justice system to change their lives by participating in the arts.

All donations from the Artvent Calendar will go towards The Arts Society’s grant giving fund, which awards grants to help preserve our artistic heritage, support the skills of artists and makers, and improve access to the arts for all.

Just beautiful, a fantastic painting. I shall certainly be looking at this artists work after Christmas.

Beautiful painting - so very clever to be able to depict light in such a way.

Impressed by the superb technique of reproducing such a real impression of candle light

When I look at this painting I'm reminded of the saying 'Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness'. Masterly.

A very convincing flame, most inspiring!

Of all the Artvent calendar days I love this one the best. It is so simple yet very evocative.
Thank you for this series. It has been magical and I’ve learned along the way.

And I also share David Yates view that how can something which will burn out and disappear ever evoke hope? Surely quite the opposite. It evokes awareness of the mortality, inevitability and insignificance or life. That isn't hope. But it is still beautiful and I love it.

It is a fantastic painting and I love it, and yes it does evoke emotion and atmosphere and nostalgia, and yes I would certainly pay for it if I could afford it which I can't. BUT to say it is aware of its own mortality. Really? It is a candle. It isn't aware of anything, even its own transience.

Very poignant. A moment of calm in a turbulent world. Thank you.

Francis Outred said that this beautiful painting was just as relevant in 2011 - as far as I am concerned it is even more relevant today, ten years on. We all need some hope in our lives.
